Burglaries can happen at any time, and it can be an extremely scary and stressful experience. Imagine coming home to discover that it has been broken into, and you have valuable items missing. While not everyone will be a victim of burglaries in their lifetime, it’s always good to be prepared. Read on to learn about the steps you should take if you have become a victim of a break-in.
Contact the Local Authorities
The first thing you should do is call your local police department immediately and tell them you’ve been a victim of a home robbery. They will come out and assess the situation, as well as try to look for the suspect. Make sure you ask them to file a thorough police report and be sure to get a copy for your records. Before they arrive, you should find a safe place to hide in case the perpetrator is still nearby or happens to still be inside your home. If you’ve been broken into while at home, you should try to leave safely or find a good place to hide until police arrive.
Take Inventory
Once the police have cleared your home and taken a report, you need to start taking a close look at anything that has been stolen. Write down a comprehensive list of the items that are missing. If you happen to have receipts for what was stolen, gather those, too. This will make filing a claim with your insurance company much easier. After you have a list, you should file a claim with your homeowner’s insurance. Depending on your policy, they can replace some or most of the value of the items that were taken.
Moving Forward
Dealing with burglaries is never a pleasant experience, but there are some things you can do to prevent it from happening in the future. Take a close look at your home’s security and determine whether or not you need to make some changes. Brighter outdoor lighting and stronger doors and windows are both good deterrents. If you don’t already have any, security cameras are highly recommended. With a few updates, you can ensure that you won’t be a victim again. Also, be sure to call a locksmith as soon as possible so they can change the locks to your home just to be safe.
